"If you have people who will exclude any of God's creatures from
the shelter of compassion and kindness, you will have people who will deal likewise with their fellow human beings."

-- St. Francis of Assisi

“The animals possess
a soul and men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren.”

"All animals are fruit of the creative action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect and they are as near to
God as men are.”

CHAPLAIN OF PETS
The Role of a Chaplain for Animals

The role of a Chaplain of Pets encompasses working with both animals and
humans. Reaching out specifically to pets in need is a very important part of our
work. This area of clerical service has a much needed place in our communities,
which for many reasons has remained underserved for the vast majority of pets,
pet care facilities and pet owners. There are a few churches today that offer
special Blessing of the Pets services once a year and there are a few pastors that
offer pet grief support, but still the spiritual role of Clergy for Pets remains for the
most part rare and unwanted.

As clergy concerned with serving pets and their families, we have the opportunity
to present another side to the role of reaching out to pets who are sick, alone,
suffering, dying, abandoned, in shelters or sanctuaries, in recovery both mentally
and physically, or in otherwise in need of comfort, love and attention. Spiritual
support, which is so needed by human beings, is also needed by pets, who are
also spiritual beings. (This should not be confused with religion, which obviously
has no meaning to animals themselves.)

Pets are living, loving creatures created by God. Their living spirits are divine
which is absolutely proven by their ability to love unconditionally, to remain loyal
and steadfast against all adversity, and to remain joyful despite outside
circumstances. The qualities, which we as humans strive to achieve and rarely do.

As Chaplain of Pets, we provide the service of offering these spiritual qualities
back to animals when they are suffering or otherwise in need, returning the 'favor'
so to speak for all that they have given us and to recognize their loving service to
humanity. Pets are indeed a divine dispensation of purity and unconditional love,
sent to us to surround us with that which is truly divine in order to improve us as
human beings.

" Pets are companions and healers of human beings and they give
us a better life here on earth.  They are the spiritual connection
between people and God's creation"
- Chaplain Keith

"St. Francis looked upon creation with the eyes of one who could recognize in it
the marvelous work of the hand of God.  His solicitous care, not only towards men, but
also towards animals is a faithful echo of the love with which God in the beginning
pronounced His 'fiat' which brought them into existence.
We too are called to a similar attitude."
- Pope John Paul II

"I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it."
- Abraham Lincoln

"All things of creation are children of the Father and thus brothers of man. ...
God wants us to help animals, if they need help. Every creature in distress has
the same right to be protected."
- St. Francis of Assisi

And if your heart is straight with God, then every creature shall be to you a mirror of life
and a book of holy doctrine, for there is no creature so little or so vile, that he does not
represent the goodness of God.
- Thomas A. Kempis (priest and monk)
